New Hampshire Artist Roster

Richard Hartshorne
Bassist / Raconteur

TA

Internationally acclaimed double bass virtuoso Richard Hartshorne, also known as “Dobbs”, is now available for solo presentations in New Hampshire. He is the first person to play and record JS Bach’s masterpiece “The Six Solo Cello Suites” as written on the bass, receiving a stunning review from Fanfare Magazine, “It’s the kind of success that only rarely crowns a lifetime of effort. Recommended with reverential urgency.” He went on to be the first person ever to perform them all on the bass in a single concert in Derry, North Ireland, Toronto, Canada, and recently in New York City. Of the Toronto performance one critic said, “His exquisitely beautiful variety of tonal colour along with his strong sense of spiritual lyricism, made one feel that they were in the presence of a great artist who has tapped into the depth of the soul of one of the world’s greatest composers.” In addition to these very serious international credentials, “Dobbs” has a lighter side. For the last 20 years he has been writing his own stories set to music which he performs alone at the bass using his gift of mimicry, his acting ability, and his skills as a raconteur. These often very funny short works have been embraced by audiences around the world as they were part of each program played by the Apple Hill Players in their Playing for Peace mission. Since leaving Apple Hill after a thirty year career, Dobbs is now taking his unique blend of Bach and stories to underserved audiences. This year's highlights included a performance in San Quentin Prison, a tour of Palestine refugee camps and a music festival in Afghanistan.
