Northern Spy
New England Contra Dance Music

Description:
Northern Spy plays traditional New England dance music. The group was started over three decades ago in the Upper Valley region and still has many of its original members. The range of instruments played allows them to produce a very full sound in concert settings and participatory dances. Band members are: Thal Aylward (fiddle) Rick Barrows (mandolin, mandola, banjo), Rachel Clark (flute, accordion), Carol Compton (piano, accordion), Alan Graham (guitar, bones), Bill Shepard (fiddle, clogging), Mary Jo Slattery (guitar), Andy Stewart (fiddle), with David Millstone (dance caller). The group was featured on Choose Your Partners, an album of contra dance and square dance music produced by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts in 1999 and released on Smithsonian Folkways.

Preferred activities and age groups: Performances at festivals, community events, schools, and private functions for people of all ages. Individual band members are also available for music workshops for children to adults.

Availability: Primarily in Upper Valley region but can travel year round.
